Effect of an Anticholinergic Antidepressant on Sleep-dependent Memory

چکیده
977 Antidepressant and Memory Consolidation—Goerke et al. INTRODUCTION Growing evidence suggests that there is a close association between sleep and memory consolidation.1–3 Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is thought to play a role in the memory consolidation process, particularly with regard to procedural memory—the memory of skills and habits.4–6 Many antidepressants, however, strongly suppress REM sleep,7 and procedural memory consolidation has been shown to be impaired in depressed patients who are undergoing antidepressant therapy.8,9 In light of these findings, it seems reasonable to ask whether antidepressive therapy can lead to amnestic impairment, especially considering that antidepressants have become the most commonly prescribed class of medications in the United States.10 Suppressing REM sleep with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluvoxamine or the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) reboxetine did not impair overnight consolidation of a REM sleep-dependent procedural memory task (mirror tracing) in healthy young subjects.11 EFFECT OF AN ANTICHOLINERGIC ANTIDEPRESSANT ON SLEEP-DEPENDENT MEMORY

Differential effect of an anticholinergic antidepressant on sleep-dependent memory consolidation.
STUDY OBJECTIVES Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is considered critical to the consolidation of procedural memory - the memory of skills and habits. Many antidepressants strongly suppress REM sleep, however, and procedural memory consolidation has been shown to be impaired in depressed patients on antidepressant therapy. As a result, it is important to determine whether antidepressive therapy ca...
متن کاملThe role of sleep on children's motor memory consolidation in a motor sequence task
Sleep has been shown to affect the consolidation of motor memory in adults. However, sleep-dependent consolidation is not well-specified in children as like as adults. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of sleep on childrenchr('39')s motor memory consolidation. The participants were 32 voluntary boys aging from 10 to 12 years old from city of Kerman, which had the necess...
متن کاملP 6: Effect of Voluntary Exercise on Learning and Memory Impairments in Sleep Deprived Female Rats
Introduction: Sleep disorders are common problems in modern societies affecting different aspects of individuals' lives. Many studies have reported that sleep deprivation (SD) leads to impairments in hippocampus-dependent learning and memory formations. Physical exercise has been shown to improve learning and memory. The objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of Voluntary...
متن کاملAnticholinergic mechanisms: a forgotten cause of the switch process in bipolar disorder.
To the Editor: In their review of the neurobiology of the switch process in bipolar disorder, Salvadore et al1 discuss such neurobiological factors as abnormalities in catecholamine levels, up-regulation of neurotrophic and neuroplastic factors, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperactivity, and circadian rhythms. However, they have ignored anticholinergic enhancement as a possible factor i...
متن کاملParasomnias and Antidepressant Therapy: A Review of the Literature
There exists a varying level of evidence linking the use of antidepressant medication to the parasomnias, ranging from larger, more comprehensive studies in the area of REM sleep behavior disorder to primarily case reports in the NREM parasomnias. As such, practice guidelines are lacking regarding specific direction to the clinician who may be faced with a patient who has developed a parasomnia...
